Studio Kura

Im the happiest person in the world

I found a ziplock bag on the streets of Itoshima.

I brought the bag back to the studio and counted the contents. Inside were thirty two matches and seventy five cigarette butts.

I created silicone moulds of the matches and cigarettes and cast them out of plaster. I now have thirty two plaster matches and seventy five plaster cigarettes.

thoughts

It's one of my final days in Itoshima and I am preemptively homesick for a place I've only known a few weeks.

Japan has acted as a foil to my own culture. Most obviously to me the frequency of bins + amount of packaging, moist towelettes and smoking indoors and cost of tobacco.

How do our surroundings shape our personalities and what do we take for granted. I don't know but I don't want to write anymore for an Instagram post.

Thank you to Studio Kura and Hiro for having me, thank you to the local community and thanks to the other artists I've met along the way. I 🩶 u Itoshima
