Artist Statement

Charlotte Simpson is an artist currently working on Gadigal land (Sydney), originally from Wiradjuri land (Grenfell). She holds a MFA and BFA completed at the National Art School. Simpson regularly exhibits across various Sydney galleries.

Through her practice, she explores themes of time, experience, site, architecture and relocation.

Installation and de-installation act as primary functions for generating work, along with studio experimentation and a physical engagement with disused sites shared through documentation.

Site is dealt with as a construct. The way one engages with space differs through social or physical situations. She uses diverse materials and methods which primarily draw from found objects and materials containing an inherent material history. Her studio practice aims to engage with the experience of a sites multiplicities through highlighting the traces left behind.

Her practice explores the notion that site and time are intrinsically linked, and their connection is fluid.

Creating a curated experience through documentation is done through detaching the original location. In this relocating of a site, a new site is created in the process.

Through creating systems that acknowledge the ways site is experienced, these systems can unveil unexpected themes and ideas; allowing the poetic and unexpected to arrive through time, use, relocation and documentation.
